Parole

The implication that this was the first use of parole, or the first use of the word 'parole', is a bit of a bum steer.

According to Wikipedia, "The term [parole] became associated during the Middle Ages with the release of prisoners who gave their word." Wikipedia also states that "the practice of paroling enemy troops began thousands of years ago, at least as early as the time of Carthage."

The first use of parole in modern times, again according to Wikipedia, was in the British penal colonies of Norfolk Island, Australia, in 1840.
